Abstract

1375072 Steel decarburization ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc. 17 Jan 1972 2219/72 Heading C7D A molten steel charge is decarburized by blowing an oxygen containing gas, beneath the melt surface, the oxygen partial pressure in the gas being governed by the equation: where Ox = the equivalent oxygen content required to yield a processed melt having a CB carbon content, C eg is the equilibrium carbon concentration, T is the temperature of the melt, H the bubble rise height, P the pressure inside the bubbles, D the bubble diameter from the determination of the initial and desired final carbon content of the melt and time of blow, and the amount of oxygen necessary to react with the carbon to bring it down to the desired level, the rate of flow of gas having a calculable oxygen equivalent partial pressure is obtainable. Steam or carbon dioxide may be used as decarburizing gas in place of oxygen. The invention can also be applied in decarburizing alloy steels containing e.g. chromium or manganese.
