Abstract

1374580 Cathode-ray tube displays SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 Nov 1971 [24 Nov 1970] 55703/70 Heading H4T [Also in Divisions H1 G2 and G5] In a head-up display, device, a display, e.g. on a cathode-ray tube 15 is replaceable by a stand-by display unit 11 projected by a collimator 13 on to a partially transparent reflector, the stand-by display unit 11 comprising a gastight housing having a transparent wall portion 88 (Fig. 5) enclosing a planar panel 84 mounted in close proximity to said wall portion, the panel carrying electric filaments (85-87), Fig. 6 (not shown), which extend across the panel intermediate the panel and wall, at least along part of its length, and are adapted to be energized to provide an illuminated display of a symbol. Terminals 76-83 for the filaments extend through a further wall 75 of the housing. Selection of the stand-by unit is effect by movement of a lever 34 which through a gear segment 37 rotates a sleeve 43 which has a pin (48) which co-operates with a groove in a plate 20 of unit 11. Simultaneously the tube 15 is pushed back into a housing 12 and the stand-by display 11 is swung into the space left between the tube 15 face-plate and a washer 27.
