Abstract
1373894 Colour television COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 27 Feb 1973 [8 March 1972] 9545/73 Heading H4F Field, frame or line sequential colour television arrangement in which a liquid crystal cell 2 is disposed between crossed polarizers 4 and 6 between an object 30 and a television camera tube 32 (e.g. a vidicon), and/or between a CRT display tube 56 and a viewer 58. The cell comprises nematic liquid crystal material, e.g. pmethoxybenzylidene-p<SP>1</SP>-n-butylaniline, between two glass plates carrying transparent plane conductors between which a D.C. or A.C. voltage is applied which has a magnitude which varies at the field, frame or line rates so that sequential colour components, e.g. red, green and blue, are picked-up by the camera 32 or viewed at the display i.e. the refractive index of the liquid crystal material is cyclically varied so that different colours are cyclically passed by the analyser 6 or 6<SP>1</SP>. The three colour signals are preferably weighted at the camera before transmission so that they may be correctly viewed on a monochrome receiver, e.g. 0À3R, 0À59R and 0À11B are transmitted, a colour receiver including the liquid crystal cell restoring the colour signal amplitude before display. The colour images may be projected on to a large screen and more than three colours may be used or the colours selected may be different for different zones of the image.
