Abstract

1371061 Sewing W J CLARKSON Ltd 26 Oct 1971 [29 Oct 1970] 51443/70 Heading D1G A work holding template 1 has a lower plate 2 formed with a continuous guide track 3 engaging a guiding peg 3a secured to the throat or needle plate of a sewing machine. The guide has a hole and a slot through it giving clearance for a needle and a knife respectively. Two top plates 4, 5 are hinged to the lower plate, and the template is moved by a roller 19 which engages the edge 17 of the template and which is driven through an arm 26 and a sprag-type one-way clutch from the machine rocker shaft. The template is thus moved intermittently, and only when the needle is out of the material. The roller is supported by an arm 20 (Fig. 2) pivoted at 21 and biased anti-clockwise by a spring 24. In operation the machine stitches the cloth until when near the end point 10 a first ramp raises the presser foot 50 and through a linkage 52, lever 53, and switch 56 increases the stitch density control 60. A second higher ramp 15, 16 raises the presser foot higher, and through a linkage 52 and a second switch 62 pneumatically switches off the motor 67, and actuates the conventional needle-position and thread trim systems. A foot controlled pneumatic valve 68 is then pressed to lift the presser foot and knife 71a clear of the template. The cylinder 72 and piston 73 (Fig. 2) also pushes the lever 77 and pawl 78 so that the roller rotates and moves the template to the starting position for the next sewing cycle (at 11). When the foot control 68 is released the piston 73 is withdrawn, the presser foot and knife lowered and the motor started. The presser foot is against a ramp 14 so the stitch density control 60 remains at its higher setting until the presser foot moves off the ramp. The stitching cycle then repeats. The roller 19 has a knurled or V-shaped edge, and means other than ramps may control the sewing machine, e.g. photoelectric apparatus. The guide member 3a may be replaced by a roller on the presser foot. (For Figures see next page)
