Abstract

1370600 Closing and securing the mouths of bags ETABS M CHAPUIS 2 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 20793/73 Heading B8C A device for presenting bags correctly when they are transferred from a filling station 3 where they are filled, one at a time, with weighty products such as concrete, fertilizers, plastics materials, &c., to a sewing, welding, or other, closing station, not shown, comprises a material discharge spout, consisting of a pair of pivotally-mounted shells 1, 2; two bag-mouth spreading rods, or retractors, 6, 7 and 6, 7 movable towards and away from each other within the vertical plane which separates the shells 1, 2; rear and front jaws 10, 11 located on either side of the lower ends of the shells 1, 2; and a pressing rod 14 which is rotatable, about one end 15, in a vertical plane, is provided with means for moving said one end in a horizontal plane, and which is mounted in front of a cooperating fixed pressing rod 12. The device also includes a pair of narrowly-spaced bag mouthguiding bars 24, 25, and a band conveyer 27. In operation the mouth of an empty-bag 13 is disposed over the shells 1, 2, and over the depending arms 6 of the spreading rods 6, 7, all of which are set close together, and between the fixed jaws 10, 11, the bottom of the bag being at a certain height above the conveyer 27, and the body of the bag being in front of the pressing rods 12, 14. The two shells 1, 2 are then moved apart to grip the bag mouth against the jaws 10, 11, so that the filling of the bag can commence, simultaneously the rod 14 is rocked downwardly in the direction of arrow 30, Fig. 2, pushed forward by means of a motor 21 and linkage 20, and then rotated in the reverse direction to bring it back to the horizontal but in front of the bag 13. When the bag is full the spreading roots 6, 7 are moved apart to stretch the mouth of the bag, which is also released from the jaws 10, 11, as the shells 1, 2 are moved together the bag falling on to the conveyer 27 as the pressing rod 14 approaches the rod 12. As the conveyer 27 removes the bag 13 in the direction of the arrow 29 the mouth of the bag slips from between the rods 12, 14 to be guided between the slide bars 24, 25. In a modification the pressing rod 14 is non-rotatively mounted and is movable firstly horizontally along its axis to one side of a bag being filled; secondly forwardly at right angles to the first direction; thirdly horizontally opposite to said first direction to a position in front of the bag; and finally fourthly in a rearward direction at right angles to the third direction to push the bag against the pressing rod 14.
