Abstract

1367901 Rotary positive displacement machines G J KNEE 29 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 8566/71 Heading F1F An internal combustion engine comprises a rotor 1 eccentrically mounted on a drive shaft 5 in a casing 2 having a substantially circular inner profile. Inlet and outlet ports 12, 13 controlled by valves 14 are positioned so as to be adjacent apex seals 20 when the rotor is in a position where the two chambers 9, 10 have minimum and maximum volumes respectively. Starting from a position in which the seals 20 cover ports 12, 13 the rotor 1 rotates clockwise drawing in gas through the port 12 into chamber 9 for 180 degrees of rotor rotation as chamber 10 exhausts the products of combustion through the port 13 which closes at the end of the first 180 degrees rotor rotation. The second 180 degrees rotor rotation produces induction of gas through port 12 into chamber 10 and compression of gas in chamber 9. The port 12 is then closed. The third 180 degrees rotor rotation is effected by combustion of gases in chamber 9 while chamber 10 is compressed. The port 13 opens so that the last 180 degrees rotor rotation results in combustion in chamber 10 accompanied by exhaust of products of combustion through port 13 from chamber 9. Alternative embodiments are also described where, instead of the inlet and outlet being in the cylindrical wall, the inlet of fluid takes places through ducts in the drive shaft and cavities in the rotor Fig. 5 (not shown) on the inlet and outlet are provided in the side walls of the casing Fig. 6 (not shown).
