Abstract

1364001 Oxidation catalysts TRUST CESKOSLOVENSKEHO PRUMYSLU DUSIKARENSKEHO 7 April 1972 [7 April 1971] 16226/72 Heading B1E [Also in Division Cl] Catlyst for use in the preparation of nitric oxide by oxidation of ammonia comprises an oxide of iron, cobalt or nickel supported on porous support material which comprises a compound having the spinel structure and containing a spinel-forming metal, aluminium and oxygen. The spinel-forming metal may be magnesium, bismuth, manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel. The catalyst additionally may comprise a promoter, for example an oxide of magnesium, bismuth or manganese. The metal(s) other than aluminium present in the catalyst may constitute up to 70 weight per cent of the catalyst which may be in the form of granules, for example rods having a diameter of from 2 to 10 mm and a length of from 2 to 10 mm. As exemplified, catalyst is prepared either by a procedure wherein a mixture containing alumina and cobaltous-cobaltic oxide is shaped into rods, dried, sintered at 1700‹C, cooled, impregnated with cobalt (II) nitrate solution and heated at 300‹C to convert the cobalt nitrate to cobaltous-cobaltic oxide (Example 1) or by a procedure wherein cylindrical granules of alumina are impregnated with ferric nitrate solution, dried at 150‹C, heated at 300-400‹C to decompose the nitrate, sintered at 1400‹C, cooled, impregnated with a solution containing ferric nitrate and magnesium nitrate and heated a 300-400‹C to decompose the nitrates (Example 2).
