Abstract
1362656 Fluidised bed apparatus UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 11 Aug 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 40701/70 Headings B1F and B2L [Also in Division F4] A fluidised bed for the pyrolitic coating of nuclear fuel particles comprises a plurality of gas inlet channels having conically divergent discharge passages 6 and nozzle receiving portions 5 the axes of which cannels are inclined away from the vertical direction and towards an adjacent channel in the circumferential direction to produce a relatively large vertical component and a relatively small lateral component to the gas jets. In one form both parts of the channel are inclined and in another form the nozzle receiving portions are inclined relative to the discharge portions. A central vertical channel or pillar may be provided. In operation coating fluid and fluidising gas are fed to each channel and the particles to be coated are rotated around the central axis of the bed as well as being held in the raised position. The bed is formed of graphite and may be constructed in one or more pieces.
