Abstract

1360793 Furnaces BRITISH GAS CORP 1 Oct 1971 [15 July 1970] 34362/70 Heading F4B An aluminium, &c. melting furnace comprises a main chamber 14 in which metal ingots fed from a shaft 13 are melted by gas burners 25 &c., with a trough 17 extending from the floor of the main chamber through a secondary chamber 16 for guiding molten metal to an outlet 18, there being a burner 31 in the secondary chamber directed toward the trough 17 to superheat the molten metal flowing along the trough. A second burner 32 may be provided in the secondary chamber the combustion gases of which pass through the outlet 18 and into a receiving vessel 34 thereby maintaining the temperature of the molten metal in the receiving vessel. An additional burner 29 may be provided in a cleaning door 30 of the main chamber. Receiving vessel 34 is generally cylindrical and is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis on rollers 35. The receiving vessel has an elongate filling opening 40 extending around 60 degrees of the vessel's circumference so that when the vessel is rotated to bring its pouring spout 41 into a pouring position 41<SP>1</SP> molten metal from the outlet 18 may still flow into its interior. Two flues are provided in the receiving vesssel to permit the escape of combustion gas entering through opening 40 from burner 32.
