Abstract

1360435 Silencers TENNECO INC 3 Aug 1971 [26 Aug 1970] 36445/71 Heading F1B A sound muffler for gaseous flow, e.g. from an I.C. engine, comprises an elongated tubular casing 13, Fig.2 containing at least two silencing units 67, 69 with an expansion chamber 39 therebetween, each unit comprising a pair of adjacent perforated tubes 71, 73 or 75, 77 arranged to provide a triflow gas path through the unit. The adjacent tubes are connected together by spot welding at 79 and are provided with louvre openings 89 in their overlapping regions. The casing may have inlet and outlet connections 55, 63 fitted to its ends by spot welding. Alternatively, the casing may gradually taper inwardly at its ends to provide connections thereat, Fig.4 (not shown). The casing may be flattened on opposite sides to form a cross-section of substantially elliptical form, Fig. 3 (not shown).
