Abstract
1360198 ZrO 2 fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1971 [19 June 1970 10 Feb 1971] 05391/74 and 5392/74 Divided out of 1360197 Heading C1A ZrO 2 fibres containing Al 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 , preferably in amounts of 0À2-20% and 2-15% by wt. respectively, may be produced by spinning a solution containing the metal compounds and an organic polymer and having a viscosity of at least 1 poise, and heating the fibres to form the oxides. The metal compounds may be chlorides, sulphates, acetates, formates, hydroxides, phosphates, or nitrates, or the basic salts. The exemplified polymer and solvent are polyvinyl alcohol and water; others are listed. The solution may be concentrated by evaporation and formed into a continuous filament by extrusion through a spinneret or into short fibres by extrusion into 2 converging gas streams which may contain the solvent vapour, e.g. humid air, the fibres being collected as a felt. The fibre may be heated at 100-2000 C. to decompose the metal compounds and polymer, and the oxide may then be sintered at 500-2000 C. The ZrO 2 may be tetragonal or cubic and the fibres may have a diameter of ¢-50 Á. Other additives and treating agents for the fibres are as described in Specification 1,360,197.
