Abstract

1360197 Fibrous catalyst compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1971 [19 June 1970 10 Feb 1971] 29909/70 and 4369/71 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions Cl and C2] A fibrous catalytic material is produced by dry spinning a solution containing one or more metal compounds and an organic polymer and having a viscosity of at least 1 poise, the organic polymer being less than 10% by wt. of the metal compound, and heating the fibres to form an oxide, the catalytic material being provided by (a) dissolving a salt of a catalyst metal in the solution and Optionally heating the fibres in a reducing atmosphere to form the metal, (b) dispersing insoluble colloidal particles in the solution, (c) impregnating the oxide fibres with catalyst material, preferably with metal salts which are heated to form oxides or metal, or (d) depositing catalyst material on the surface of the fibres. The catalyst material may be H 3 PO 4 , H 2 SO 4 ; Cu, Ru, Ni, Pd, Pt, Ag, Mo; chlorides of Cu, Sb, Al, Cr; organometallics; carbonyls, e.g. HCo(CO) 4 ; molybdates, of Co, Ni, Bi, Cu; oxides of Co, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Al; Zn chromite. The examples all relate to ZrO 2 fibres, containing catalytic material as follows: by method (a) -Al 2 O 3 (14, 18, 35), Ni+Cu (15), Co oxide (16) RE oxide +Co (23), Cu +RE oxides (24), Al and Co oxides (25), Ni and Al 2 O 3 (26), Pt and RE oxide (27), Co+RE oxides (28), Co, Al, and Ca oxides (30), Bi, Mo, and Al oxides (31) Co+Cu+RE oxide (38), Co+Mn+RE oxide (40); by method (c) -Ni (7), H 2 SO 4 (12), Pt (13); by method (d) -Co 3 O 4 (8-11), Ni oxide (17).
