Abstract

1358665 Powdered metal compacts R M KOERNER 28 July 1972 [25 Jan 1972] 35418/72 Heading B5A Green compacts are formed by placing a batch 9 of particulate material in an isostatic mould 3, applying an isostatic pressure # 3 along all but an axis of the mould and applying an axial pressure # 1 which exceeds the isostatic pressure # 3 along the axis so as to produce a controlled stress within the batch while not exceeding the failure shear. The isostatic pressure # 3 may be applied by passing pressure air through a line 5. The axial pressure # 1 may be applied by a load piston 10, 12. The isostatic and axial pressures may be applied simultaneously (graph 1, Fig. 9) or sequentially (graph 2, Fig. 9). The full isostatic pressure # 3 may be applied initially and then the axial pressure # 1 (graph 3, Fig. 9). The isostatic pressure # 3 may be increased to the ultimate normal stress and then reduced at the rate at which the axial pressure # 1 is applied (graph 4). Finally the isostatic pressure # 3 may be raised above the final normal stress and then reduced at a rate greater than the rate at which the axial pressure # 1 is increased (graph 5). An air bleed 7 is provided to allow air within the batch 9 to escape. The particulate material may be non- metallic or metallic, e.g. Al, Ni, Cu, W or sponge, irregular or spherical Fe powder. The green compacts may be subsequently sintered, e.g. Fe in dry H 2 at 1000‹ F. for 1 hr.
