Abstract
1355383 Foaming a cross-linked polyolefin SANWA KAKO CO Ltd 3 Aug 1971 [12 Aug 1970] 36501/71 Heading C3C A process for the production of a foamed cross-linked polyolefin comprises adding a blowing agent to a cross-linked polyolefin, milling the resulting blend at an elevated temperature to disperse the blowing agent homogeneously, and blowing the milled blend at an elevated temperature. The polyolefin may be a homo- or co-polymer of an olefin and crosslinking may have been effected by an organic peroxide or ionizing radiation. The blowing step may be carried out under superatmospheric pressure. In the examples polyethylene is crosslinked by α-dicumyl peroxide and the blowing agent used is azodicarbonamide. In Example 2 the polyethylene is foamed whilst it is crosslinked with dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine and the product is milled to eliminate the foam structure before adding the azodicarbonamide.
