Abstract
1355039 Passenger conveyer handrails DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 17 May 1971 [16 May 1970 (2)] 23812/70 and 23813/70 Heading B8A Passenger conveyer handrails are of flexible polymeric material 3 having a longitudinally extending reinforcement strip 4 which may be of magnetized or unmagnetized steel, glass fibre, or carbon fibre. There may be a layer 8 of magnetized elements which repel the handrail from a similar series of elements 20 on the balustrade 18, and attract it to magnets around the periphery of a drive roller (Fig. 6, not shown). A magnetized release shoe (30) may assist in releasing the handrail from magnetic engagement with the drive roller. The layers 8 and 20 may comprise a mixture of 95% barium ferrite in a polymeric binder material. The layer 8 may comprise magnets disposed at right angles to the direction of travel and parallel with the supporting surface of the balustrade 18. Alternatively they may be disposed at right angles to the supporting surface and the direction of travel. In the latter case, the strip 4 may complete the magnetic circuit. Diagrammatic layouts are shown (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) for extruding the handrails.
