Abstract
1354649 Vehicle safety device VOLVO AB 19 Sept 1972 43323/72 Headings B7B and B7H In a motor vehicle a connecting arm 10 forms a toggle joint connection between the engine unit 3 and the vehicle body 1 so that in a front end impact the engine is forced downwardly beneath the passenger compartment. As shown the connecting arm 10 which is U-shaped is partially welded at one end to trunnions 9 secured to beams 8 of the vehicle floor 5 and at the other end is secured via a rubber buffer 11a to engine mounting 11 of engine support 12. During a head-on collision a turning movement of arm 10 about trunnions 9 is set up resulting in the engine unit 3 being forced downwardly and subsequent detachment of the arm 10 from the engine unit and vehicle body. The arm 10 may alternatively be attached to trunnions 9 by a break pin or they may be integral with a break pin inserted between the trunnions 9 and beams 8. Also, the arm 10 may be free of the trunnions 9 until contact is established during the collision. Two separate connecting arms may be provided on each side of the engine unit.
