Abstract

1354565 Purification of adiponitrile RHONEPOULENC SA 23 June 1971 [24 June 1970] 29480/71 Heading C2C Adiponitrile is purified by contacting at a temperature of up to 50‹ C. inclusive with 0À1 to 5 times its weight of an aqueous solution containing 0À1 to 3% by weight of an inorganic or organic acid whose acidity constant pKa is not more than 5, and the adiponitrile is then separated from the aqueous layer by decantation and subsequently subjected to a fractional distillation. The acid may be, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, orthophosphoric, acetic, benzoic or methane sulphonic and the impurity removed is typically iminocyanocyclopentane.
