Abstract

1354362 Tobacco-smoke filters EASTMAN KODAK CO 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 22919/71 Heading A2C [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Cigarette filters may be prepared from a crimped tow of continuous filaments of cellulose acetate, each filament containing dispersed therein at least 4% by weight of discrete particles of one or more metal oxides selected from ferric, zinc and cuprous oxides, the particles ranging in size up to 1 micron. Filter plugs effective for selectively removing toxic hydrogen cyanide gas from tobacco smoke are prepared by treating the above filter tows with one or more organic deactivating agents, preferably selected from the group triethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, triethyl glycol diacetate, triacetin, propylene glycol triethylcitrate, and di(methoxyethyl)phthalate, which are presumed to render the cellulose acetate more premeable to HCN and thus promote its adsorption onto the metal oxides.
