Abstract
1354170 Rotary I C engines R J BERNSTEIN 31 Aug 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 40498/71 Heading F1F A rotary I. C. engine comprises a first piston 16 mounted for oscillation about a pivot 17 in a first cavity of a chamber 11 and having a curved surface 19 engaging the periphery of a second piston 21 mounted on a shaft 22 for rotation in sealing engagement with the walls of a substantially cylindrical cavity 14b, the first piston 16 defining a compression and ignition chamber in the first cavity 14a, the combustion gases therein causing the first piston 16 to turn about pivot 17 and produce rotation of the second piston 21, until the first piston opens communication between the two cavities 14a, 14b whereupon the combustion gases act directly on the piston 21, exhaust gases being forced out through port 28. On further rotation of the piston 21, it acts on the first piston 16 to effect the next compression stroke of a two-stroke cycle a fuel-air charge being admitted via an inlet valve 13. The pistons have all-round radial and axial seals and a further radially movable seal is mounted in the wall of the second cavity 14b. A plurality of units may be mounted on a common shaft 22, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). The engine may be adapted for four-stroke operation.
