Abstract
1353327 Making dies; electro-erosion IJR (INOUE-JAPAX RESEARCH Inc) 13 May 1971 14652/71 Headings B3A and B3V [Also in Division C7] A method of making a die comprises shaping a layer 2 into a forming surface of the die on a master 1, electrically machining a conductive block 3 using the layer as an electrode to form a backing member and bonding the layer to the backing block. The die master 1 may be a specimen of the article to be made or a model made from gypsum, wood, graphite, plastics or the like. A layer 2 of a metal such as nickel copper, nickel-cobalt alloy, tungsten-cobalt alloy, chromium or iron is electrodeposited on the surface 1a of the master. Silver, gold or graphite is first deposited on a non-conductive master and it may subsequently be removed from the deposited layer. If necessary an additional layer 21 of a different metal is deposited on the first layer 2. The laminated layer 2, 2<SP>1</SP> is placed in a holder 10, through which coolant flows, to form an electrode for electro-erosive machining of a steel block 3. When machining of the block surface 3a is completed, the laminated layer is bonded to the block by adhesive, brazing or soldering. The layers 2, 2<SP>1</SP> may be used to machine the block electro-chemically. The electrical machining and die facing layers (12), (12<SP>1</SP>) may be initially of sheet metal and applied to the die master, e.g. by high energy rate forming, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown).
