Abstract
1352204 Heat exchangers J R LAGE 3 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 51176/71 Heading F4S In heat exchange apparatus consisting of a series of chambers 3 joined together to form a unit having a heat exchange surface 4, each chamber is sub-divided by a partition 5 into first and second flow chambers 9 and 10 respectively, the heat exchange medium having a linear motion 1 in the first flow chamber and a helical motion 2 in the second flow chamber 10 adjacent the heat exchange surface 4. The medium enters the second flow chamber by way of a vertical slot passage 7 defined by a side wall 8 of the chamber and a wall 6 which merges with the partition 5. As shown the partition 5 has an oblique surface which causes the helical path diameter to increase continuously as it proceeds in the axial direction. In order to enhance the formation of the helical flow the bottom edge of the wall 6 may be bent over as shown at 13. In a modified embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) the slot passage (7) leading the medium from the first to the second flow chamber is disposed in the centre of the chamber (3) whereby two helical flow paths (2) of opposite senses are formed in the second flow chamber.
