Abstract
1347542 Purifying I.C. engine exhaust gases FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 10 July 1971 32487/71 Heading F1B A reactor has a catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxides on platforms 29, 33', adjacent the casing inlet 23, a catalyst for oxidizing hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide on platforms 31 adjacent the casing outlet 25 and a pipe 13 for introducing air into the casing 21 immediately downstream of the platforms 29, 33. Air may be introduced to the reducing catalyst. The casing 21 is formed of heat insulation material. The platform surfaces are fluted to increase their surface area. A thermocouple 35 controls the operation of a valve (15), Fig. 1, (not shown), which is opened above a certain temperature so that the exhaust gases by-pass the reactor through a pipe (17). A proportion of the exhaust gases, e.g. 15%, may be recirculated to the engine intake through a pipe (19), Fig. 1, (not shown).
