Abstract
1347367 Graft polymer dispersions LUBRIZOL CORP 27 July 1971 [10 Aug 1970] 35218/71 Heading C3G In an aqueous dispersion of film-forming macromolecules, at least a portion of said macromolecules has grafted thereon one or more amide units derived from a monomer of formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are each independently selected from hydrogen, hydrocarbon radicals and substituted hydrocarbon radicals; R 6 is selected from hydrogen halo and C 1 to C 10 - alkyl radicals and Z is The dispersion may be prepared by mixing a polymer, preferably a polymer of vinyl acetate, an alkyl acrylate or an alkyl methacrylate, with a monomer of the said formula and carrying out the polymerization in an aqueous medium. Alternatively the polymerization is carried out in bulk or in an organic solvent and the graft polymer produced is dispersed in an aqueous medium. In the examples, (a) polyvinyl acetate latex is heated in the presence of t-butyl hydroperoxide before or while being contacted with (i) diacetone acrylamide or (ii) hydroxy methylated diacetone acrylamide, the resulting graft polymer being blended with additional polyvinyl acetate latex; (b) vinyl acetate/nbutyl acrylate copolymer latex is heated in an aqueous medium containing said hydroperoxide and then grafted with monomer (ii), or is heated in a similar aqueous medium containing monomer (i); (c) vinylacetate/di-n-butyl maleate copolymer latex is heated with said peroxide and then grafted with monomer (ii); (d) a vinyl acetate (vinyl ester of C 9 -C 11 -alkanoic carboxylic acids copolymer latex is heated with monomer (i) and said hydroperoxide; (e) vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer latex is heated with said hydroperoxide while being contacted with monomer (i) or prior to being contacted with monomer (ii); (f) ethyl acrylate (methyl methacrylate copolymer latex as in (e); and (g) butadiene-styrene copolymer latex is grafted with monomer (i) using said hydroperoxide as initiator. The graft polymers are incorporated in compositions comprising (1) polyvinyl acetate grafted with monomer (ii) or vinyl acetate/nbutyl acrylate copolymer grafted with monomer (ii), and a pigment slip containing red iron oxide, talc and barytes; (2) vinyl acetate polymer grafted with monomer (i), ammonium caseinate, rosin ester resin, phenol-formaldehyde resin and styrenated phenol; (3) butadiene-styrene copolymer grafted with monomer (i), ammonium caseinate, phenolformaldehyde resin, styrenated phenol, sulphur, zinc oxide and zinc N,N- dibutyldithiocarbamate; (4) vinyl acetate polymer grafted with monomer (i), tetrasodium pyrophosphate, cornstarch, clay, styrenated phenol and optionally, titanium dioxide.
