Abstract
1346217 Cutting apparatus HARRISINTERTYPE CORP 12 Oct 1971 47466/71 Heading B4B A machine for trimming a book 24, Fig. 1, comprises a rotatably mounted cutting element positioned to intersect the path of travel of a book through the machine, and means for rotating the cutting element. The cutting element comprises a circular disc 18 of substan- tially rigid construction and a plurality of thin cutting blades 20 mounted adjacent the circumference of the disc, spaced apart from one another and extending outwardly from the disc. As described the cutting element is carried by a carriage 12 which is horizontally and vertically adjustable to position the element relative to the path of travel of books 24 advanced by clamps 16. The books are supported during cutting by a back-up wheel 42, Fig. 4, and also by a back-up plate 47, Fig. 1. The plate 47 has a projection 53, Fig. 9, with which the cutting edges of the blades 20 co-operate to trim the book. The plate 47 is adjustable horizontally by gears and shafts, e.g. 37, Fig. 1, to maintain the projection 53 in its optimum position. The disc 18 of the cutting element has a bevelled edge 18a, Fig. 4, and the blades 20 which may be of sintered tungsten carbide may be brazed thereto.
