Abstract

1342954 Wells &c COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES 26 April 1971 [15 May 1970] 11287/71 Heading E1F A well 1 is fractured by forming a hole 11 at an angle to the well; placing an explosive charge in the bottom of the hole 11 and exploding the charge. A tool holder comprising a tube 13 having holes 16 is anchored in the well by shoes 19, and a drilling tool having a body 17 is lowered into the holder, an indexing device 20 ensuring that the outlet of a rigid tube 29a, 29b in the tool is opposite one of the holes 16. In the tool an electric motor 22 rotates shafts 23, 24, the shaft 24 being moved longitudinally for feeding a bit 31 by a piston 25. A flexible shaft 28 carrying the bit is connected to the shaft 24 and guided by the tube 29a, 29b to drill a hole 11. A pump 34 draws fluid from the well to cool the motor and to enter the tube 29a, 29b to act as drilling fluid, drillings falling into a basket 36. After a hole 11 has been drilled the drilling tool is raised and lowered into the holder to drill another hole. A finger 51 stops drilling and may be set to interrupt the drilling of a hole so that the end of a hole may be sampled by a core drill. After the holes have been drilled the drilling tool is removed from the well, and a tool 37 for setting the explosive charges is lowered into the holder. A tool motor 38 is rotated to drive a piston and cylinder 41, 42 downwardly, rigid tubes 45 supported by the cylinder forcing depending flexible tubes 46 through guide tubes 47 to enter the holes. The tubes 46 contain the explosive charges and glass balls. Before the tubes 46 extend to the bottoms of the holes movement of the cylinder is stopped and the piston expels liquid 50 (which may be explosive) from the cylinder to project the charges into the holes. The anchor and setting tool are withdrawn and the charges are exploded from the surface or by a delayed action device.
