Abstract

1342093 Welding by pressure; casting composite articles METHONICS Ltd 3 Dec 1970 [4 Dec 1969 27 April 1970 23 Nov 1970] 57474/70 Headings B3F and B3R [Also in Divisions C7 and F3] An incendiary component for ammunition is made in a process which comprises bonding a solid alloy including, as major constituent, a rare earth metal, to a steel substrate. The alloy (see Division C7) also includes materials selected from carbon, iron, titanium, copper, antimony, tin, zinc, lead, beryllium copper, aluminium and magnesium. The preferred rare earth is mischmetal. The alloy has a density 86% that of steel and possesses incendiary properties. The bonding is effected by cleaning the substrate and casting the alloy in contact with the cleaned surfaces. The alloy may be cast onto a single surface or between two opposing surfaces. Following solidification of the alloy an additional step of heating at 800-1300‹ F. for 6-48 hours in an inert atmosphere may be performed to form a diffusion bond between the alloy and substrate. In an alternative method, the alloy is applied to the substrate in solid form by clamping or by weights and then diffusion bonded thereto.
