Abstract
1340121 Treating I. C. engine exhaust gases DONALDSON CO Inc 19 April 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 21370/71 Heading F1B Exhaust noise is attenuated by supplying droplets of liquid into the exhaust gas stream. The liquid, e.g. water containing anti-freeze and pollutant reducing catalysts, is supplied by a pump 31, e.g. driven by the engine 10, to a nozzle (34), Fig. 2, (not shown), in the exhaust pipe 12 or by the injector action of the exhaust gas flowing through a venturi containing a liquid nozzle (46), Fig.4, (not shown). The liquid and exhaust gases pass through a silencer 13 to a separator 25 in which the separated liquid may be cooled by air-flow througha radiator core 22 produced by a fan 23 or motion in the case of a vehicle mounted engine. The liquid may be separated in a centrifugal separator and subsequently air cooled in a heat exchanger. A replenishment tank (50), Fig. 5, (not shown), may be connected to the liquid circuit. The liquid may be cooled by a cooling tower(43d), Fig. 7, (not shown), having a replenishment liquid supply controlled by a float valve. The supply of liquid in gallons / min may be set to 0À005 times the engine horsepower times the cross-sectional area of the exhaust pipe in square inches.
