Abstract
1,239,784. Sleeve couplings. ANACONDA WIRE & CABLE CO. 1 Oct., 1968 [6 March, 1968], No. 46573/68. Heading H2E. In a sleeve connector of the type containing dielectric compound and wherein wires 11, 12 are crimped, comprising a hard metal conductive sleeve 19 having inwardly pointing teeth 21 which pierce the insulation 17 of the wires and make contact with the cores, surrounded by a deformable conductive sleeve 22 and an insulating plastics jacket 24, the jacket 24 is formed with tubular extensions 31, 32 at both ends, one of which 31 is sealed at 33 and the other 32 is formed with a radial constriction 37 so that, on crimping, the flow of the dielectric compound out of the open end is hindered by the constriction, ensuring a good moisture seal. The sealing and formation of the constriction may be accomplished on a device comprising a block 38 of similar cross-section to that of the sleeve 22, surmounted by a pin 39 of width similar to that of the spacing between opposite teeth in the sleeve 19. The conductive sleeves 22, 19, made of brass and bronze respectively, are placed over the pin 39 so that there is a small gap 41 between the sleeve 22 and the block 38 and the whole is surrounded by a length of heat-shrinkable plastics tubing 32 e.g. PVC. A pellet of heatdeformable material 36 is placed on top of the sleeve and the jacket 32 is heat shrunk so that it firmly grips the sleeve 22 and the pellet 36 thus sealing one end of the jacket and forming a radial constriction in the gap 41. The connector is then filled with dielectric compound.
