Abstract

1,233,915. Analyzing gases. MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. July 30, 1969, [July 2, 1968], No.31486/68. Heading G1N. In apparatus for measuring the concentration of a gas in a sample of air, the air sample is first subjected to a physical or chemical process specific to the particular gas to produce particles, is then ionized, e.g. by a radio-active source, and then passed, via a restricted orifice, into a charging chamber, the orifice and walls of the chamber having different potentials so that all the ions of one sign are swept into the chamber to set up a unipolar plasma on which the particles are charged by collisions, the quantity of charge of the particles being measured, e.g. by an electro-meter to indicate the concentration of gas. To separate the charged particles from the unipolar ions, they are subjected to an electrostatic barrier, such that only the charged particles are allowed through. The charged particles may be collected by a wire wool filter connected to earth via a resistor. If the air contains sulphur dioxide, it is subjected to U. V. light so that sulphur particles are formed, and if the air contains ammonia or a primary amine, it is subjected to hydrochloric acid to produce particles. The apparatus for charging the particles by setting of a unipolar plasma of ions is as described and claimed in Specification 1, 105, 604.
