Abstract

A beam, column or like elongated structural member is strengthened by providing a series of transverse notches t in one of its surfaces, subjecting same to load and whilst under load filling in the notches with a suitable material. The beams may be made of concrete, wood or cast iron suitably reinforced as necessary for details of which together with suitable filling materials and crosssections the Specification and remaining drawings (not shown), should be referred to. The notches are directed towards the neutral axis and in the case of a pillar are disposed in the lower portion thereof. An arch may be likewise strengthened by incorporating conccrete quoins in the extractor. Again, the beams may be made up from a number of slabs and incorporated in a ceiling structure adapted to receive lower ceiling slabs and superimposed flooring slabs for details of which the Specification should be referred to.
