Abstract
1,230,923. Tumbling. TEXTRON Inc. 2 May, 1969 [25 June, 1968], No. 22572/69. Heading B3D. A process for polishing plastic parts of spectacle frames comprises placing the parts in a receptacle 10 with scrap pieces of plastic, water and a finely powdered abrasive, and effecting a tumbling operation while keeping the ingredients in the receptacle refrigerated. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the receptacle consists of a barrel or vibrator 10 which is mounted on springs 14 and connected to a hood 12 by a flexible bellows 20. A chamber 28 provided with a door 74 communicates with the vibrator 10 and is connected by a pair of pipes 36, 51 to main pipes 34, 53. Pipe 34 receives cold air from a branch pipe 32 connected to a refrigerator 30 operated by a condenser 60 and motor 64, a fan 33 blowing the cold air along pipes 34, 36 into a portion 40 of chamber 28 separated from the main chamber by a baffle 42. After passing through the vibrator, the air returns through chamber 28 and pipes 51, 53, 55 to the refrigerator. Dampers 54, 56 in a branch pipe 52 and pipe 35 maintain the air at about 48‹ F. in the vibrator. The scrap pieces of plastic may have the shape shown in Fig. 9 and are cut during the making of the frames. The pieces are mixed with pumice, waxy polishing material, water and, if necessary, a water softener. The vibrator is operated at 1650 vibrations per minute for one hour, additional waxy material and water then being added.
