Abstract

1,228,461. Ethylene oxide adducts. JEFFERSON CHEMICAL CO. Inc. 12 March, 1968 [13 March, 1967], No. 12094/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Haze-free non-ionic surfactants having cloud points up to 100‹ C. are prepared by reacting a primary alcohol of general formula where n is an integer from 6 to 19 or where n is an integer from 3 to 16 and R is a methyl or ethyl group, or mixtures thereof, with ethylene oxide or a mixture of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide at a temperature of 125-180‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst, normally an alkali metal hydroxide, neutralizing said catalyst, recovering the non-ionic surfactant from the crude product, mixing therewith a small but effective amount of an adsorptive clay and recovering therefrom said non-ionic surfactant. The adsorptive clay, which may be acid activated clay or preferably acid activated montmorillonite clay, may be added to the reaction mixture during the neutralization step or alternatively subsequent to the neutralization step but prior to the recovery step.
