Abstract

1,226,944. Branched polyamides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 April, 1968 [1 May, 1967], No. 20020/67. Heading C3R. The polymerization of a lactam, aminocarboxylic acid or diamine-diacid salt which without modification would yield a polyamide having a gel time of at least 1500 minutes is effected in the presence of excess base and a chain branching agent to give a modified polyamide having a melt viscosity of at least 400 poise at 25‹ C. above the optical M.P. of the polymer. Specified polyamides are nylons 6, 68, 610, 11 and 66/6 in ratios between 3:1 and 1: 3. Specified chain branching agents are trimesic acid and bis-hexamethylene triamine, which may also provide the excess base. The amount used should be sufficient to give the specified melt viscosity and will usually be 20 to 150 moles/g. of monomer. The amount of excess base should provide an excess of at least 80, preferably 150 to 200 basic over acidic groups and where a basic branching agent is used adjustment may be effected with a dibasic acid. The polymers may be spun to acid-dyeable fibres.
