Abstract

122,651. M³ller, P. C. Jan. 21, 1918, [Convention date]. Paper and like bags, folding down mouths of after filling.-In a machine for closing partly filled bags, such as are shown in Fig. 4, having plates at the sides, the pleats at the upper part are restored by the action of strikers or pushers at the places 10; the bag is then upset by being struck above the level of the contents and the upper part is turned down to form a nap; the bag is then pushed into a discharge channel arranged transversely to the direction in which the bags are fed into the machine. In the machine shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the bag 20 is placed by hand in a tube 5, provided with a number of pivoted pyramidal members 6 which are pushed aside by the bag and then return and push inwards the pleats at the upper part of the bag. The bag is upset by being struck by a cross-bar 15 carried by arms 13, which are operated by the movement to the right of a slide 11. To cause the flap to fold neatly, a hinged flap 17 may be provided for forming a preliminary fold. The flap is moved aside by the bag in falling down the tube 5 and is then returned by a weight or a spring. To prevent escape of dust from the bag, pivoted spring-pressed plates 18 may be provided for engaging the mouth of the bag. The upset bag is transferred by a pusher 23, on the slide 11, to the discharge channel 37 which fits closely the bag. The bag passes under a pivoted flap 25 which presses the flap against the bag. The bags are sealed by a label which is applied to the bag and over the flap. Adhesive is first applied from a band 29, Fig. 2, and the label is applied later by devices not shown. The band 29 passes through a receptacle 31 for adhesive and is intermittingly pressed against the bag by a plunger 28, which is raised by a. lever 33 and depressed by a spring 34. The lever 33 carries a hook 32. in the path of the bar 15. The slide 11 and a feed-device for the bags can be operated by hand or automatically. The members 6 may also be arranged for automatic operation. An additional rocking member may be provided for assisting the bar 15 in upsetting the bag.
