Abstract
1,226,042. Diffraction gratings. TOYOTA CENTRAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT LABORATORIES Inc. Nov. 5, 1968, No.52334/68. Heading G2J. A diffraction grating for electromagnetic waves within a wide range from ultraviolet to long X-ray can be produced by polishing the crystal surfaces (110) and (123) of a high quality single crystal of aluminium by electrolytical means using an ethanol solution of perchloric acid. For mass production copies of the diffraction grating can be made by adhering softened, melted or partially dissolved high polymer material to the surface, allowing it to dry, and then removing the copied surface and sputtering it as described below. Several of these surfaces can be joined together to form a wide grating. The spacing between the lines (grating constant) of the aluminium grating can depend linearly on the length of time of electrolytic polishing. On directing an incident beam of light at the grating, the generation of an unwanted diffraction image which is practically indistinguishable from the spectroscopic image required may be avoided by sputtering materials such as gold, chromium or platinum, whose characteristic X-ray wavelength is shorter than the wavelength of incident light, on to the aluminium crystal. The clarity of the stripes on the crystal can be improved by annealing the crystal for a few days, before polishing.
