Abstract

1,224,741. Cooling cables. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 13 May, 1968 [13 Feb., 1967], No. 2010/67. Heading F4U. [Also in Division H2] In a method of cooling an underground cable, the cable is enclosed in a conduit, to the interior of which liquid coolant, e.g. water, is supplied to wet the cable surface and the resulting vapour is continuously withdrawn, condensed and recirculated. The maximum temperature of the cable may be controlled either by controlling the withdrawal of vapour or by controlling the supply pressure of the coolant. As shown, two conduits are provided, the lower conduit 14 containing the cable 3 and being filled with coolant while the upper conduit 15 is intended exclusively for vapour. The two conduits are connected together at intervals by vertically extending pipes 16. In the controlled supply pressure method each pipe includes a level controller, e.g. float-operated valve, bellows operated valve, microporous diaphragm or the level control is effected by means of an elongate interconnecting pipe. The level controls are situated outside the pipes in the controlled vapour withdrawal method. Alternative forms of control systems incorporating a transducer measuring coolant temperature are also described.
