Abstract

1,224,259. Forging; rolling. B. & S. MASSEY Ltd. 3 July, 1969, No. 33510. Headings B3H and B3M. A forging apparatus comprises a die 11 formed of movable parts 14, 23 and an ejector 26 and a die 10 adapted to carry out circular rocking motion about a point. The die 11 has a workpiece receiving recess 13 in a block formed integral with or mounted on the part 14 which acts as ram. A flange 15 on the ram is provided with a pair of hydraulic or pneumatic jacks 18. The other part 23 also acts as a ram movable inside the ram 14 by similar drive means. The ejector 26 is similarly operated within the part 23. A stop 30 is moved under the ejector after it is raised to hold the ejector relative to the die. The position of the stop 30 is adjustable. Ejection is effected as the rams are retracted. In operation a billet is placed in the die 11 and the ram 14 moved towards the die 10 by the jacks 18. The rams 14, 23 are then advanced together to upset the billet. During forging the ejector is advanced to form a blind bore in the billet. In an alternative embodiment the cylinder for the second ram (123), Fig. 2 (not shown), is formed within the main ram (14). In a further embodiment the cylinders for the second ram 200, Fig. 4, and the ejector 201 are formed within the main ram 14. In the above embodiments the rams preferably act vertically. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the rocking die 211a is mounted on a fixed cross-head 210 and the die 212 on a movable cross-head 213. The bore of the cross-head 213 has a wear resistant sleeve 215 which is removable for replacement by a sleeve with a different bore. A ram cross-head 216 has a main ram 217 and a second ram 218. The main ram serves to move the cross-head 213 towards the die 211a and the second ram moves bar or tube stock through the sleeve towards the die before movement of the cross-head 213. The upset stock may be ejected by the second ram 218 although it is preferable to move the cross-head 213 out of the press axis for ejection by a ram. One arrangement of this type has a pair of crossheads (213), (213a), Fig. 6 (not shown), which are alternately pivoted into the press axis. Alternatively the dies (221), (222), (223), (not shown), may be mounted on a turret for successive co-operation with a rocking die (211a). Two rocking dies (252), (252a), may be provided to initially upset the billet and finally forge it. The spare stations are used for loading and ejection. Instead of rotating the bolster the dies may be arranged on a linearly reciprocating bolster. The fluid lines are controlled by valves which may be automatically controlled.
