Abstract

1,223,431. Drilling; off-shore structures. J. C. STORM. 2 Jan., 1968 [29 March, 1967], No. 260/68. Headings E1F and E1H. Apparatus for drilling inclined or vertical wells on land or marine locations comprising a derrick 13 pivotally mounted on a base for rotation in a vertical plane about a horizontal axis 52, means-for example a hydraulic ram 29 - to adjust the derrick to the desired vertical or inclined position, a rotary table 14a pivotally mounted for rotation about axis 52 and having an operating aperture therethrough the axis of which intersects axis 52. The derrick may have braces 31-33 and guide lines 34 to hold it in its operating position, and a folding walkway 62. Channels (23) (Figure 7) extending along the derrick and guide the wheels of a travelling block. A swivel having wheels running in the channel and a kelly connected thereto are removed from the channels by an arm pivotally movable on the derrick adjacent openings in the channels. A pipe elevator has wheels adapted to run in the channels. A forked arm (56) (Figure 9) may be provided adjacent the foot of the derrick to maintain the kelly or sections of the drill pipe aligned with the derrick when the kelly or sections would otherwise only be supported by the block. The arm is moved by a ram into and out of operative position. Pipe handling means 16 comprise pipe supports (77) (Figures 8 and 14) movable on rollers along a cradle 65 of V-cross-section. The cradle 65 is connected by parallel links to a base and can be raised or lowered by a hydraulic ram. Pipe storage means are positioned adjacent the handling means 16. In the embodiment shown a platform 1 has piles 3 driven into the sea bed and a vertical and a plurality of inclined guide tubes 11, through each of which a conductor casing 11 a can be driven. There is a drilling hole in the platform aligned with each tube 11 and the derrick &c is moved from hole to hole.
