Abstract

1,222,635. Disc brakes. ISUZU MOTORS Ltd. 12 Sept., 1969, No. 45206/69. Heading F2E. In a disc brake comprising a brake disc 1 having two brake pads 3 disposed, respectively, on opposite sides thereof, actuating means ineluding a piston 4 slidably mounted in a cylinder 5 with a brake pad mounted or adjacent the end of said piston, automatic clearance adjusting means are formed by said piston being provided on its periphery with a plurality of grooves 6 parallel to each other and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the piston and resilient means 7 engaged with any one of the grooves, the resilient means being securely fixed to said cylinder in order to return the piston when the brake is released and the arrangement being such that when the clearance C between the brake disc and the brake pads exceeds a predetermined limit due to wear of the brake pads the resilient means is moved into engagement with the next groove adjacent the groove originally engaged by the resilient means, so that the piston is advanced towards the disc by one pitch of the grooves to thereby keep the clearance within a predetermined limit. The grooves may be annular as shown, or in the form of circumferentially spaced, longitudinal sets of grooves, and the resilient means may comprise an annular plate 20 with or without radial slits 21 or notches at the inner periphery thereof, an annular plate divided into two or more segments, or leaf-spring tongues.
