Abstract

1,221,502. Vacuum drying apparatus. HULL CORP. 31 March, 1969, No. 16643/69. Heading F4G. In vacuum drying apparatus of the type in which vertically spaced hollow shelves 28 in a casing have heated fluid flowing through them, the fluid is fed to and received from the shelves 28 by two vertical manifolds 44, 46 communicating with the shelves inside the casing, having an adjustable valve 52 for connecting either one manifold with the outlet conduit 54 of a heated fluid source and the other manifold with the return conduit 56 or vice versa. An electric solenoid valve 52 has two positions determined by the setting of switch 60 which is controlled by timer 64. In one position the outlet conduit 54 of the heated fluid source is connected to manifold 44; the fluid flows through the shelves 28 along a sinuous path and returns through manifold 46 to the return conduit 56. In the second position the outlet conduit 54 is connected to manifold 46 and the fluid flows in the opposite direction through the shelves 28. In a second embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the outlet conduit (74) is connected to the top of manifold (44) and the return conduit (76) to the bottom of manifold (46) by rotatable circular valves (70), (72). The valves are ganged together and by rotating clockwise through 90 degrees the connections are reversed and the fluid flows through the shelves in the opposite direction. In a freeze drying process, the heated fluid may be preceded by a refrigerant which freezes the material on the shelves before drying.
