In a nuclear reactor, having a heavy water moderator 5, contained in a calandria tank 4, control is effected by the flow of a neutronabsorbing gas in the calandria tubes, 3. The gas passes along the annular spaces 7, between the coolant conducting tubes 1 and tubes 3. The absorbing gas, krypton, is mixed with a carrier gas CO 2 and reactivity control is effected by variation of the gas mixture. Continuous separation out of the CO 2 is effected by condensation at 14. In a further embodiment, the valve admitting the absorbing gas, boron trifluoride, to the reactor is controlled in response to a signal indicating a reactor fault condition whilst during normal operation, a gas coolant, CO 2 is circulated through spaces 7.
