1,221,171. Overhead cables. G. K. N. SOMERSET WIRE Ltd. 9 Jan., 1970 [10 Jan., 1969], No. 1501/69. Addition to 1,194.321. Heading H1A. An overhead power cable comprises a core of aluminium or aluminium base alloy around which is wound wires or strands of pure aluminium, the core and surrounding wires being permanently elongated by more than 0-25%, e.g. 1% before the cable is used by stretching the aluminium at between room temperature and 300‹ C., e.g. 200‹ C. The core and the wires forming the winding may be elongated separately, but it is preferred to elongate them in one single operation after winding on the core. A typical aluminium base alloy may comprise aluminium 95%, copper 4%, magnesium 0.5% and manganese 0.5%.
