Abstract

1,219,833. Ignition systems. LUMENITION Ltd. Feb.7, 1969 [Feb.29, 1968; Oct. 22, 1968; Nov. 19, 1968], Nos. 9946/68; 50102/68 and 54775/68. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] A device for switching the primary circuit of an ignition coil includes a radiation sensitive element 18 which will switch on or conduct when exposed to radiation. An opaque member (not shown) having at least one aperature therein is positioned between a radiation source 10 and the radiation sensitive element. Means are provided for moving the opaque element in timed relation to the engine. Timing may be controlled centrifugally electrically or by engine vacuum. The radiation source may be a gallium arsenide lamp which emits radiation in the infrared region of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The radiation sensitive element may be a photo transistor 18 and the output from the photo transistor 18 is amplified by a transistor 24. The second part of the circuit is the transistorized ignition unit and includes a fast inverse switching transistor 26 and a high voltage power transistor 28 associated with the ignition coil 40. Specifications 472, 688; 513, 629 and 789, 949 are referred to.
