Abstract

1,217,804. Voltaic cells and half-cells. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 7 July, 1969 [15 July, 19681, No. 34094/69. Heading H1B. A half-cell comprises a lithium or Li-Al alloy anode and an electrolyte which comprises a solution of LiPF 6 in a substantially neutral, inert solvent, the electrolyte conductivity being at least 0À001 ohm<SP>-1</SP> cm.<SP>-1</SP>. Suitable solvents include N,N - dimethylformamide, N,N - dimethyl-acetamide, acetonitrile, propylene carbonate, dimethyl - sulphoxide, butyrolactone, nitro - methane, dimethylcarbonate, methyl acetate, methyl formate and diethylene glycol dimethyl ether. Voltaic cells using these half-cells are useful as primary and/or secondary batteries. Suitable cathodes comprise a reversibly reducible cathode depolarizer, e.g. an oxide, sulphide or carbonate of copper, FeS, NiS, NiF, nickel oxalate, sulphur, the ferrocyanide, oxalate, tartrate or citrate of Cu (II). The cathode may be in paste form in contact with an electrolytically conductive material, the paste comprising the particulate depolarizer, a particulate electrical conductor, e.g. C black and LiPF 6 electrolyte. Alternatively, the cathode may be a porous sheet comprising the particulate depolarizer and conductor and a polymeric filler, e.g. PTFE, and the sheet may be sintered. The anode alloy may be prepared by fusing Li and Al together or by electrolytically reducing lithium ions on an aluminium cathode.
