A motor vehicle door latch assembly comprises a keeper plate 21 to be secured to the door post and a latch 20, Fig. 2, to be fixed to a co-operating door, the latch including a bolt 23 movable to a release position in which the door can be opened by a first release member 42 formed by a double armed lever 44, 45 pivotally mounted on one lever arm 47 of a rocking lever 49 which is movable into either of two positions in one of which the first release member is in a position to operate the bolt and in the other is moved to an inoperative position. The levers 42 and 45 are balanced so that transverse acceleration will not cause them to rotate. The bolt 23 has a plate 37 secured thereto having a part 41 engageable by the end 43 of the first release member 42 to operate the rotatable bolt when the member 42 is rotated anti-clockwise by a push button 51 on the outside of the door. The rocking lever 49 is operable by a rod 56 connected to a door window frame button to raise member 42 to its inoperative position, when the door is locked. A nose 67 on the bolt plate 37 is engageable by an arm 70 on a second release lever 68, Fig. 1, operable by a remote handle on the inside of the door. In a modification, (Fig. 11 not shown), the rod 56 is dispensed with and the lever 49 is operated by a rod connected to the arm 70 of the lever operated by the remote handle. Movement of the handle in one direction then operates the bolt plate 37, while movement in the other direction rocks lever 49 anticlockwise to raise member 42 to its inoperative position and lock the door.
