Abstract

1,211,452. Change-speed control. ROOTES MOTORS Ltd. 20 May, 1969 [5 April, 1968], No. 16491/68. Heading F2D. The various gear selecting positions (PRND21) of a motor vehicle gear selector lever 16 pivotally mounted in a fixed plane in a slot 15 of a base member 17 closed by a slide 19 movable along grooves 21 in the base 17 by the lever 16 which engages through an opening 18 in the slide 19, are shown by a co-operating gearindicating scale 25 and pointers 23 respectively formed on the base 17 and slide 19. The base 17 may be part of the vehicles' floor, tunnel or gear-box casing, the indication scale 25 having two adjacent windows 24 through which the slide pointers 23 can be observed, the scale symbols 25 and pointers 23 being treated with luminous paint. As shown, the lever 16 directly engages the slide 19 through the clearance opening 18 which allows for the pivotal movement of the lever. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate alternative connections between the lever and slide to eliminate the lost-motion of the above arrangement resulting from the clearance opening 18, the arrangement of Fig. 4 having a sleeve (26), sliding on the lever, with transverse trunnions (27) engaging the slide, whilst in Fig. 5, lateral cross-pins (29), on the lever, engage elongated slots in brackets on the slide. For ease of reading, the indication scale may be inclined relative the base member, the slide being of thin flexible strip to readily deflect during movement thereof.
