Abstract

1,209,795. Centrifugal separators. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 4 Feb., 1969 [22 Feb., 1968], No. 8618/68. Heading B2P. A centrifugal separator for removing dust particles from air-streams, Figs. 1 and 2, includes at least one flow channel in which a swirl-imparting helical vane assembly 2 extends along the channel from adjacent the inlet right to the outlet thereof with radial clearance from at least part of the peripheral boundary 1 of the channel to define therewith a substantially axially extending passage, and a flow divider 3 located at or near the downstream end of the flow channel to separate air flowing with centrifugally separated dust along the passage from cleaned air flowing through the vane assembly. As shown, the channel boundary is formed by a tube 1 within which the vane assembly comprising circumferentially spaced vanes 5, 6, 7 carried on a core member 4 is supported by circumferentially-spaced longitudinal ribs 8. The helical angle of the vane assembly varies between a minimum at the ends of the assembly and a maximum at approximately half way thereof. The flow divider 3 is bell-mouthed to provide a diffuser section. A number of separators may be assembled side by side to provide a multi-cell unit in which the tubes are hexagonal, Fig. 3 (not shown), the section of tube wall between adjacent tubes being common to both. In a further multi-cell unit, Figs. 4 and 5, a longitudinally extending baffle 11 having radially extending arms mutually spaced at 120‹ is provided in each interstice between adjacent vane assemblies 2. The arms of each baffle bear tangentially against the three respective vane assemblies and the arms of adjacent baffles overlap to provide longitudinal channels between adjacent vane assemblies. At their downstream ends the vane assemblies are fitted in sleeve members 14 surrounding corresponding holes in end plates 12, 13. The end plate 13 is formed with diffuser sections 15. The end plate 12 is pierced with a number of holes (16), Fig. 6 (not shown), disposed between the baffles 11 and the sleeve members 14 so that the channels defined by the overlapping arms of the baffles are connected to the space between the two end plates which surrounds the sleeve members 14. In operation, separated dust and air flow through the channels and are discharged through the holes into the space between the two end plates 'which may be connected to an air filter. The vane assemblies may be arranged to swirl the air in the same or in opposite directions.
