Abstract

1,209,089. Making electrical connectors. THOMAS & BETTS CORP. 19 April, 1968, No. 18626/68. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H2] An electrical connector, formed from a strip of sheet metal 42 by a series of stamping and bending operations (fig. 3), comprises a terminal portion, and a tubular portion formed by bending over the rectangular portion of sheet metal. The edges of the rectangular portions are bevelled, so that opposite edges form a seam 40 (Fig. 9) which does not increase the thickness of the tube walls. Electrical connection is made by force fitting a wire or cable into the tubular section, and to facilitate this a flared shoulder portion 50 is incorporated. In accordance with the invention, the sheet is provided with corner extensions 48, so that no V-shaped gap appears, in the circumference in the region 58, as happens in the prior art (Figs. 1 and 2,-not shown), when the tube is flared. The size of the extension may be varied to give maximum overlap (Fig. 11, not shown), or minimum overlap, this latter resulting in a butt seam (Fig.13, not shown). Grooves 36 are cut in the sheet-metal to give an enhanced friction grip on the wire. A metal sleeve 54 covers the connection and is itself covered by a nylon sleeve 56
