Abstract

Shell moulds are manufactured by applying to a pattern a slurry containing sodium silicate or potassium silicate, coating with refractory, applying a liquid gelling agent for the slurry, the gelling agent including a phosphorus-containing compound, and allowing the silicate to gel. The phosphorus-containing compound is preferably phosphorus pentoxide which may be dispersed in an organic carrier, e.g. ethyl alcohol. The gelling agent may also include a hydrolysed alkyl silicate. The refractory may be applied from a fluidized bed and may be, for example, calcined alumina, fused silica, zircon, molochite, or quartz sand. The slurry may comprise potassium or sodium silicate in water, e.g. with a viscosity-increasing material, e.g. zircon or molochite flour and defoaming agents, e.g. octyl alcohol, silicones and wetting agents, e.g. detergents, dioctyl sulfosuccinate, The pattern, which may be a core box, may be initially coated with a slurry comprising a hydrolysed alkyl silicate. Gelling may be effected in warm air or in vacuo.
