[Also in Division B8] A process for promoting plant growth on soil comprises applying a mat to the surface of the soil, the mat comprising a perforated plastics sheeting to which is applied a layer of a mixture of seed, fertilizer, and a layer of highly pervious (to air), rottable fibrous material (e.g. straw), which has good light-transmitting properties. Growth promoting substance and humus or humus-forming substance may also be added. The plastics sheeting can be uppermost, lowermost or on both sides of the said layers, and the layers and the sheeting may be quilted together. The seed-containing layer may also include an adhesive such as bitumen, starch, etc.
